When it comes to the younger generations depending on your age and what you do, you have an opinion. Most of the time those opinions are not very favorable toward our young people. Somehow so many of us can act like the previous generations were so much better, that their work ethic was so superior, that they were more loyal, and not as entitled. What is interesting every generation has pretty much said the same thing about the new generations coming up. We have a tendency to over-estimate ourselves, and dramatically under-estimate those who are coming after us.
Mark Perna Generations Expert and Author of the book Answering Why: Unleashing Passion, Purpose, and Performance in Younger Generations joins us on this episode of A New Direction. Mark helps all of us understand who the younger generation is, why they do what they do, what they want, and how to educate, parent, and employ this younger generation with great success. It all starts with removing the labels, and understanding that parents have done so much to protect their children that the children are looking for experiences more so than for money. They want to be part of something that makes an impact on this world. And when you start to think about just those to things, deep down isn’t that what we all want to do?
Answering Why: Unleashing Passion, Purpose, and Performance in Younger Generations is a tremendously insightful book. Not only does it provide fabulous insights into our younger generations, but it serves as a guide to help us better educate them, employ them, and how we can be instrumental into the productivity in their lives. Mark Perna also shed light into how our educational system is perhaps sending the wrong message. Maybe not everyone needs to go to college, in fact what Mark demonstrates in his book that there are a variety of ways that young people can make a great living by not going to college. He even gives us a brief view of his creation The Career Tree. and it just makes sense. It is time for us to redefine what we are feeding this younger generation…because we the older ones are sending the wrong message and it is time for us to change it. And it starts with our attitude and our effort. We can change the world if we reach to help, support, encourage, and understand. Because the saying is true, “seek first to understand, before you want to be understood”. Enjoy the show!
